Sponsored Athlete Spotlight: Megan Winick

Frogsong Farm is based in Oregon, but has many dear friends and family members in Colorado. One such friend is MMA fighter Megan Winick! We’re proud to sponsor Megan and support her as she trains and competes.  Megan was kind enough to answer a few questions for our FSF community. Curious about the harmony between sports and CBD? Read on to learn about mixed martial arts, life after addiction, and how she uses CBD to be the best athlete she can be.

1) For those who don’t know, can you share a little bit about who you are, what you do for a living, and what you are passionate about?

My name is Megan Winick and I live in Fort Collins, CO. I work full time for the Health District on
a team that serves children and adolescents who are struggling with mental health and
substance abuse issues. I am also an amateur MMA fighter, so when I am not at work I spend
most of my time at Trials MMA where I train. When I am not working or training I love
spending time with my boyfriend, our two dogs, and my family.

2) How did you get started MMA fighting?

When I was 23 I ended a 3 year relationship that was a really bad situation, to say the least. I
needed something to do to help me stay busy so I started taking kickboxing classes at Title Boxing Club in Fort Collins. I’d been there about a year when I met a woman who worked at Title Boxing, who happened to be an MMA fighter. I went to watch one of her fights and I was super inspired. She invited me over to Trials MMA to start training, and that is how it all began. I fell in
love with the sport and have been consistently training ever since. It was really intimidating at
first! I remember being super nervous just to walk in the door for class. I had no idea
what I was doing. But every time I walked in the door and completed a class, it helped my
confidence and self-esteem so much. It forced me to do something that was really
uncomfortable. I truly believe you don’t grow as a person unless you learn to be okay with
being uncomfortable. I am so glad I stuck with it because I couldn’t imagine my life without
fighting and without my teammates and coaches at Trials MMA!

3) What are some common responses you hear when people learn you are an MMA fighter?

Are there any misconceptions of MMA that you’d like to clear up?

People are usually really surprised when they learn I am a fighter. I think a lot of it is because I
am a girl and I also hear “but you’re so sweet!” Haha! As far as misconceptions, it seems like some
people don’t see fighting as a sport. People don’t realize all the hard work and sacrifice that it
takes to actually get in a cage a fight someone. Until I actually did it, I didn’t really understand
either. After every fight I have learned something new, especially from my first MMA fight that I
lost by TKO. (Technical Knock-Out: when an opponent is injured during a fight and is unable to go on.) If you actually want to be good and be successful, it takes a lot of hard work, mentally and physically.

4) What is the greatest obstacle you have overcome in your personal life?

When I think about this question there are so many obstacles I have faced that I could share about, but one of the greatest obstacles that I have overcome has been my past issues with
substance abuse. I went through a lot as a teenager with drugs and alcohol, way more than
what a typical teen goes through. I was in a really bad place. I eventually got completely sober
by going to AA when I was 17 and stayed sober for over 10 years. Recently I found that I can
drink normally. I have found that my issues as a teenager do not reflect who I am today as an
adult. It took a lot for me to make this discovery, but I am really glad that I did!

Staying sober for all of those years is something I am very proud of and if I had not done that, I am not
sure I would be alive today or have the amazing life I have now. There are a lot of things in my
life that have been really hard, but every single one of those obstacles has made me stronger
and made me the person I am today. I am always happy to share my past experiences if it
will help someone else through dark times.

5) What’s your big dream? Where do you see yourself in ten years?

My dream is definitely to be a professional fighter in the UFC or other major fighting
promotion. In 10 years I see myself retiring from a fun and successful fighting career,
being married to my best friend, owning a house, continuing to be successful in my job, still
training at Trials. I want continue to live a healthy lifestyle and stay in shape, traveling, loving
my life and being surrounded by my family and all the people I love.

6) Talk about your experience with CBD and why you are so passionate about it.
Frogsong Farm CBD was actually the first CBD I had ever tried. I assumed all CBD had a lot of
THC in it and was psychoactive so I never thought it would be an option for me. When I learned
of the low content of THC in Frogsong Farm CBD, I tried it and I absolutely loved it!! I have
never used anything that works so well for sore muscles and inflammation. I also take the
Frogsong Farm CBD Drops which I feel has helped me so much with anxiety and my overall
wellbeing. I am so glad that I tried Frogsong Farm CBD and have them as a sponsor! Being able
to use their products helps me so much, especially with all the training that I do.

7) Do you have any special pre-fight or post-fight rituals?
I always get my nails done the Thursday before my fight haha!!

8) Name three things you enjoy doing when you’re not training.
1. Hang out with my boyfriend and my family. That is my most favorite thing to do besides train.
2. I love doing things with my two dogs, Kady and Rhett. I couple of weeks ago my boyfriend
and I took them paddle boarding and it was so much fun!
3. Eat chips and watch T.V haha!! Truly. Most people that know me know that Wednesday night
is “chip night”!

9) Anything else you’d like to add?
